Q Do I have to undergo a polysomnography (PSG) during sleep apnea treatment?
A It is not strictly necessary, but it is helpful for obtaining an objective standard when severe disease is suspected or when there is no response to treatment. Having an AHI value makes it possible to set Korean medicine treatment goals and assess progress more accurately.
Detailed Answer
Linking Polysomnography (PSG) with Korean Medicine Treatment
Polysomnography (PSG) is the standard test that simultaneously measures brain waves, oxygen saturation, breathing, and more during sleep to accurately calculate the AHI.
- Suspected mild disease (snoring only, minimal daytime sleepiness): Korean medicine treatment can begin even without PSG
- Suspected moderate to severe disease (witnessed pauses in breathing, severe daytime sleepiness, poorly controlled blood pressure): PSG is recommended
How to Use the Test Results
If you bring your PSG report to your visit at Dongjedang, we reflect the AHI and the pattern of oxygen saturation drops in your treatment plan. If the AHI is 30 or higher, we also provide guidance on combining treatment with CPAP.
PSG can be performed at sleep clinics or large hospitals near Dong-gu, Incheon, and Dongjedang can also help guide you to testing facilities.
