Q My dermatologist prescribed an anticholinergic medication. Is it okay to take herbal medicine along with it?
A Anticholinergics are effective because they block the sweat gland signals, but they can cause side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. They can be used together with herbal medicine if taken 1 to 2 hours apart, and if you let us know which medications you are taking during your visit, we will reflect this in the prescription.
Detailed Answer
Anticholinergics such as glycopyrrolate and oxybutynin reduce sweating by blocking the muscarinic receptors of the sweat glands, but they can be accompanied by side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, and blurred vision. When taking herbal medicine together with an anticholinergic, leaving a gap of 1 to 2 hours minimizes interference with absorption. Suddenly stopping the medication can cause a rebound and worsen symptoms, so once things have stabilized, we adjust the dose to taper it down gradually.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
If you show us the medication you have been prescribed during your visit, we will adjust the herbal formula and the timing of doses accordingly. If you have dry mouth or constipation caused by the anticholinergic, we may also tailor the herbal direction toward replenishing bodily fluids (jin-aek). We manage the combination of medications and a gradual reduction together.
