"Suddenly my ear felt blocked like a rock and all I hear is ringing" | Sudden tinnitus in a 40s self-employed person who suffered extreme stress
An Uninvited Guest Tearing Through the Silence: Ears Heavy as a Stone
Jae-hun (pseudonym), a 40s self-employed man who came through my clinic door, wore a deeply bewildered expression, etched with prolonged, suppressed fatigue.
He had been experiencing hearing disturbances that came without warning a few days before — enough to make even normal conversation impossible.
"One morning I woke up and suddenly one ear felt blocked like a stone, and all I could hear was a sharp machine-like beeping, while my own voice echoed like inside a tunnel."
These were the words Jae-hun anxiously confided when he first came to see me.
Having kept his shop open night and day for years under sales pressure, he had tried to push through for a day or two, thinking it must just be accumulated fatigue.
But the ENT gave him the thunderbolt diagnosis of sudden hearing loss and tinnitus.
Even after beginning steroid treatment urgently, the constant noise inside his ear and the stifling sense of sounds being far away did not easily improve.
While undergoing treatment diligently, he was tormented by anxiety about when he might lose his hearing completely.
With sharpened nerves making even sleep difficult, his symptoms worsened in a dark downward spiral.
Even when told that numerically he was improving slightly, the intensity of the ear blockage and noise that he himself felt had not decreased at all.
I did not see Jae-hun's painful symptoms as simply a structural problem of the auditory nerve or cochlea.
I deeply empathize with the deep loneliness of feeling cut off from all the sounds of the world, and the cliff-edge terror of not knowing when that sound might be silenced forever.
The Body's Overloaded Alarm: Life's Flame Surging Upward
In Korean medicine, the phenomenon in which extreme stress and suppressed emotions cause the body's internal heat to surge toward the head and ears is called 간화상염 (肝火上炎).
This refers to the state in which the liver's energy — responsible for communication and detoxification — becomes blocked and transforms into fierce heat.
This is very similar to the precarious situation of a pressure cooker with the steam vent blocked, but with the fire still going.
Moreover, in Jae-hun's case, over a decade of fighting hard to run his shop had accumulated chronic overwork.
As a result, even the kidney energy that stores life force in its depths — the state of 신허이명 (腎虛耳鳴) — had reached its bottom.
Extreme stress and accumulated fatigue collapse the delicate balance of the autonomic nervous system, suddenly cutting off the very fine microcirculation flowing to the cochlea and auditory nerve.
This can be understood as a kind of microvascular infarction and neuroinflammatory response.
Auditory cells that cannot receive adequate nutrition and oxygen through normal blood flow begin to slowly starve and become damaged.
The abnormal electrical signals generated in this process are incorrectly transmitted to the brain, where they are perceived as sharp metallic noise that does not actually exist.
In addition, the turbid, sticky waste matter — 담음 (痰飮) — generated by stagnation of the body's fluid metabolism was completely blocking the fine pathways of qi and blood circulation around the ear.
This is like mud that has solidified in a blocked drainpipe that cannot flow.
It blocks lymph fluid circulation deep inside the ear, causing the stifling sensation of blocked ears and a feeling of pressure.
Tinnitus Born of Daily Pressure — How Can We Give the Ear Room to Breathe?
To escape this dark, stifling suffering and regain the clear, peaceful sounds of daily life, what efforts are needed?
Looking closely at Jae-hun's precarious daily habits: the most painful root cause was his irregular, shallow sleep, tossing and turning every night under the pressure of sales figures and interest payments.
Also at fault was the habit of not eating on time due to a busy shop schedule, hastily consuming spicy, salty delivery food.
These harsh daily pressures extremely activated the sympathetic nervous system that guarantees survival.
Therefore, to gradually lower the increased pressure inside the ear and help the hardened blood circulation around it, careful changes to daily life are necessary.
First and foremost, salty foods and stimulating seasonings must be decisively reduced — they hinder fluid metabolism and cause vascular swelling.
Instead, keeping warm water at about body temperature nearby and drinking it frequently to lower the sticky viscosity of the blood must precede everything else.
Also, even for just 5 minutes during a busy day, close your eyes and repeat deep abdominal breathing. This is practice in supplying fresh vitality to the brain and auditory nerve that are suffering from oxygen deficiency.
Before going to bed, gently stroke the stiff muscles at the back of the neck and around the ears with your fingertip warmth. This will help open the blocked qi and blood pathways and considerably reduce the intensity of tinnitus.
However: if sudden ear blockage is accompanied by extreme dizziness or vomiting severe enough to make even walking difficult, this may be a danger signal indicating a cerebrovascular condition or central nervous system emergency — seek emergency care immediately without delay.
The Journey of Regaining Sound: Time to Rebuild the Body's Collapsed Environment
Please listen carefully to the signal your body is sending through tinnitus and sudden hearing loss.
Looking deeply into the root cause hidden within is the first step toward true healing.
The process of treating tinnitus and sudden hearing loss is not the temporary measure of forcibly suppressing the unpleasant machine noise in the ear with medication.
It is a worthwhile journey of improving the entire body's environment that has become barren from long neglect, and restoring lost vitality.
Just as the trajectory of each patient's life is different, a precise prescription tailored to unique constitution and stress pattern is needed.
If the life energy that has been depleted over years is gradually replenished, and the fire energy surging upward toward the head is calmly settled, the results will surely be different.
Your body will finally display a remarkable self-healing capacity greater than any precision machine.
You will be able to greet the clear, vivid sounds of daily life again with a relaxed smile.
My role is to be a warm companion who searches together with patients for the hidden key to healing — not just mechanically prescribing and needling.
Please do not crouch alone in the fearful silence and incomprehensible noise that has suddenly arrived.
You are never alone, and the collapsed balance can surely be restored.
Even if not with me — I sincerely hope you will find healthcare providers who deeply empathize with your tired body and mind.
