When children line up by height at school, your child is always at the front.
You've probably felt anxious thinking, "When will they grow…"

There is only one critical timing window for your child's height growth.
Girls: ages 10-12, Boys: ages 12-14.
With proper management during this 'growth spurt period,' children can grow 8-12cm per year.

Conversely, if you let this period pass without action, as the growth plates close, opportunities shrink dramatically.
Focus on these 3 habits alone.
Your child's growth potential will transform.

1️⃣ Have your child do jumping exercises for 30 minutes daily

Exercises involving jumping movements such as jump rope, basketball, and badminton are ideal.
When jumping applies appropriate impact to the growth plates, bone growth is stimulated.
Aim for 30 minutes daily, at least 5 days a week.
For jump rope, 500-1000 repetitions per day is appropriate.

2️⃣ Put your child to bed before 10 PM

Growth hormone is released most abundantly between 10 PM and 2 AM when in deep sleep.
Since deep sleep is reached 1-2 hours after falling asleep, your child should be in bed by 9:30-10 PM at the latest.
Put away smartphones and tablets one hour before bedtime.
Blue light suppresses sleep hormone (melatonin).

3️⃣ Protein side dish with every meal + at least 500mg calcium daily

Bones need raw materials to grow.
Include at least one protein-rich food per meal such as eggs, tofu, fish, and chicken breast.
Two glasses of milk (approximately 400ml) provide about 500mg of calcium.
If your child doesn't tolerate dairy products, you can substitute with anchovies, broccoli, and tofu.

If there is no change despite self-management, or if customized care tailored to your child's constitution is needed, working with a specialist to identify the root cause is the fastest approach.

image.jpg🚨 Warning | Warning Signs That Must Be Checked

✔ If your child is growing less than 4cm per year
This is significantly below the average growth rate for peers.
There may be underlying causes such as growth hormone deficiency or thyroid dysfunction.
Growth plate examination and blood tests should be performed.

✔ If secondary sexual characteristics appear before age 8 in girls or age 9 in boys
Early breast development or pubic hair growth is a sign of precocious puberty.
With precocious puberty, growth plates close earlier than expected.
Although children may appear taller initially, final adult height is often 5-10cm shorter.
Early detection is important.

✔ If your child doesn't eat well and has frequent digestive issues
No matter how nutritious the food, if it is not digested and absorbed properly, the building blocks don't reach the bones.
In traditional Korean medicine, this is called spleen-stomach (脾胃) deficiency.
If poor appetite and indigestion persist for more than 3 months, it can cause growth delays, so check digestive function first.

image.jpg🧠 The Why | Cause Analysis

It's easy to understand if you think of growth plates as a 'bone factory.'

Growth plates are cartilage tissue at both ends of bones.
When this factory is operating, cartilage cells multiply, and as calcium accumulates on top, bones lengthen.
This is how height increases.

The fuel that runs this factory is 'growth hormone.'
It is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and is released intensively during deep sleep and exercise.
This is why sleep and exercise determine height growth.

The problem is that this factory has a 'closing deadline.'
When secondary sexual characteristics begin, sex hormones are released and growth plate closure starts.
Children grow significantly during the growth spurt period, then growth rate drops sharply afterward.
In girls, growth plates mostly close 1-2 years after menarche; in boys, 2-3 years after voice change.

Traditional Korean medicine holds that 'the kidneys govern bones' (腎主骨).
Additionally, when the spleen-stomach (digestive system) is weak, the ability to extract nutrition from food diminishes, resulting in insufficient growth building materials.
Therefore, Korean medicine growth treatment addresses both improved digestion and kidney energy (腎氣) strengthening.

📊 Proof | Cases and Evidence

According to research by the Korean Society of Oriental Pediatrics, children who received herbal growth medicine showed an average 1.5-2cm additional growth over 6 months compared to the non-treatment group[3].

Cases I have encountered in clinical practice are similar.
There was an 11-year-old girl with a height of 138cm, in the bottom 10% of her age group.
After constitution diagnosis, she took herbal growth medicine to strengthen the spleen-stomach for 6 months while correcting jump rope exercise and sleep habits.
After 6 months, her height increased to 145cm (7cm growth), and her growth rate returned to average for her age group.

Research consistently confirms that growth hormone is released over 70% during deep sleep, and regular exercise increases growth hormone secretion by 2-3 times[2].

image.jpg🔚 Closing | Summary and Encouragement

The most important factor in your child's height growth is 'timing.'
By managing sleep, exercise, and nutrition during the growth spurt period, you can maximize your child's growth potential.

Growth plates don't wait.
Precious time can pass while you hesitate and say, "Let's wait and see a bit longer."

❓ FAQ

Q. At what age should a growth plate examination be done?
It is good to have one from age 7-8.
By checking growth plate status and bone age at this time, you can prepare before the growth spurt period arrives.
Early examination is particularly recommended if the child's height is in the bottom 25% of peers or if parents are short in stature.

Q. From what age can herbal growth medicine be given?
Generally, it can be taken from age 5-6.
However, the most effective time is just before the growth spurt period, around ages 8-10.
By improving digestion and constitution at this time, greater effects can be expected during the growth spurt period.

Q. What is the best exercise for height growth?
Jumping exercises such as jump rope, basketball, and badminton are most effective.
They provide appropriate stimulation to growth plates while promoting growth hormone secretion.
Conversely, exercises with excessive joint stress such as weightlifting or long-distance marathon running should be avoided as they can damage growth plates.
