Q I'm still taking a PPI and a laxative. Is it okay to take digestive herbal medicine alongside them?

A In most cases, herbal medicine can be taken alongside your current medication, but you must disclose all medications and dosages you are currently taking so they can be safely coordinated. Do not stop or reduce your medication on your own — any tapering plan should be decided together with your prescribing doctor.

Detailed Answer

If you are taking a PPI or laxative, disclosing your current medications, dosages, and any other drugs you take is the basic safety step before combining them with herbal medicine. PPIs alter stomach acidity and can affect the absorption of other medications taken together, and laxatives can also overlap in timing with the elimination of other drugs, so coordination is needed. Stopping or reducing medication on your own judgment can worsen rebound effects, so any tapering must be done gradually and only in consultation with your prescribing doctor.

Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective

At Dongjedang, during your visit we check your current stomach medication and other drugs to design a prescription that does not conflict, and also guide you on separating dosing times if needed. Any tapering or stopping of medication must always be done gradually in consultation with your prescribing doctor, and herbal medicine plays the role of buffering the rebound heartburn and difficulty with bowel movements during that process.
