Q I'm taking medicine from a gastroenterologist. Is it okay to take herbal medicine alongside it?

A It's fine to take them together if you space them out. We usually advise taking herbal and Western medicine 1–2 hours apart, and if you tell us your current medications at the consultation, we adjust the herbal composition and dosing times accordingly.

Detailed Answer

There's no need to arbitrarily stop the medicines prescribed for achalasia (e.g., drugs that relax the esophageal entrance). Taking herbal and Western medicine about 1–2 hours apart causes little interference with each other's absorption. However, since some people find swallowing the pills themselves uncomfortable, it's good to also check the method of taking them.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

If you tell us all the medicines you're taking, we design the herbal medicine so there's no overlap or burden. Korean medicine treatment doesn't replace procedural or drug treatment but supports it alongside, so we manage safe concurrent use while you maintain your attending physician's prescription.
