Q I'm taking dizziness medication (betahistine, antihistamines) prescribed for my BPPV. Is it okay to take herbal medicine at the same time?
A You can take them together if you space them apart. We usually advise leaving 1-2 hours between herbal medicine and Western medication, and once symptoms stabilize, we coordinate with you to gradually reduce the Western medication.
Detailed Answer
Even if you are taking betahistine (which improves inner-ear blood flow) or antihistamines/vestibular suppressants commonly used for dizziness, there is no need to stop them suddenly; you can take them with a 1-2 hour gap from your herbal medicine. If you tell us all the medications you are taking at your visit, we will adjust the herbal formula and dosing times accordingly. As symptoms stabilize with treatment, we work with you to taper the Western medication gradually.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Some dizziness medications cause drowsiness, which can interfere with driving or daytime activities. Dongjedang composes herbal formulas in a way that minimizes such daily inconveniences, going beyond merely suppressing dizziness to address the internal causes of dizziness by resolving dameum and replenishing qi and blood. The long-term goal is a state in which you can rely less on medication.
