Q I'm worried that taking herbal medicine for a long time might be bad for my liver.
A Dongjedang's cluster headache decoction is formulated with the goal of improving liver function, and we also provide guidance on regular liver-function monitoring.
Detailed Answer
Herbal Medicine and Liver Safety
Yongdamsagan-tang (Gentian Liver-Draining decoction), used for cluster headache, is a formula that, as its name suggests, brings down liver heat (ganyeol). Its constituent herbs, such as rehmannia (jihwang) and water plantain (taeksa), have thousands of years of use, and at appropriate doses they can actually have a liver-protecting effect. Problems tend to arise from ingredients of unknown quality or from excessive doses.
Dongjedang's Monitoring Principle
For patients on long-term medication of three months or more, we recommend an interim blood test (liver enzyme levels). If you already have liver disease or are taking many other medications, please be sure to tell us during your consultation. If jaundice, fatigue, or indigestion worsens significantly while taking the medication, let us know immediately and we will adjust the prescription.
