Stages of Otitis Media Treatment at Dongjedang

1. Constitutional diagnosis at the first visit — We assess the excess or deficiency of Lung-heat, phlegm-fluid, and Spleen qi through pulse, tongue, and abdominal examination. We confirm the type of otitis media (acute, effusion, recurrent) and the state of hearing.
2. Herbal prescription — To a base of formulas in the Hyeonggae-yeongyo-tang and Ijin-tang families, we add or subtract Lung-clearing and Spleen-tonifying herbs according to the constitution. For children we combine formulas in the Sogeonjung-tang and Bojungiki-tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi decoction) families.
3. Acupuncture and ear/ENT bloodletting — Needling key points on the Lung and Large Intestine meridians circulates Lung qi. Bloodletting around the eustachian tube directly resolves congestion and swelling.
4. Progress review and adjustment — After 2-4 weeks we check symptom changes and adjust the prescription. For effusion-type cases, we decide whether to continue treatment with reference to hearing test results.
