Q Is it safe to take Changija-san or Hyeonggae-yeongyo-tang long-term?
A At Dongjedang, we prescribe individualized doses after assessing your constitution, so short- to mid-term use (1-4 months) is generally safe. Because Xanthium fruit (changija) has reports of liver toxicity when overused, adhering to the proper dose is important.
Detailed Answer
Safety by Ingredient
- Xanthium fruit (changija): excellent for clearing the sinuses and for antibacterial action. However, there are reports of liver toxicity with overdose (more than 15 g per day) and long-term use. At Dongjedang we prescribe within the therapeutic dose (5-10 g).
- Schizonepeta, forsythia, coptis (hyeonggae, yeongyo, hwangnyeon): highly safe anti-inflammatory components, with almost no adverse reactions in long-term administration studies.
- Angelica dahurica, mint, magnolia flower (baekji, bakha, sinihwa): generally safe. Magnolia flower during pregnancy requires consultation before use.
Monitoring
At Dongjedang, when use exceeds 4 weeks we check digestive function and liver values, and we adjust the prescription immediately if any adverse reaction occurs. If you have an existing liver condition, please be sure to tell us at the first visit.
