Q I was prescribed steroids and vasodilators. Is it okay to take herbal medicine at the same time?
A If you let us know during your visit which conventional medicines you are taking, we adjust the herbal prescription accordingly. Generally, herbal and conventional medicines are taken one to two hours apart, and during the steroid course we choose formulas that place little burden on digestion.
Detailed Answer
Steroids have side effects such as gastric irritation, so it is important that the herbal medicine also be composed in a way that does not burden digestion. Direct interactions between vasodilators and herbal medicine are rare, but at Dongjedang we review the list of medicines you are currently taking before prescribing, so that overlapping or conflicting components can be adjusted in advance. We may also compose the herbal medicine to ease steroid side effects (stomach discomfort, swelling).
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Dongjedang composes prescriptions that restore inner-ear blood flow and support recovery within a range that does not interfere with conventional treatment. During the steroid-tapering period, we add Kidney-tonifying (boshin) formulas that strengthen immunity and vitality to carry the later recovery phase along stably. It is important to inform both your Korean medicine doctor and your conventional physician of your dosing schedule and amounts.
