Q I am using a prescribed nasal spray and an antihistamine. Is it okay to take Korean herbal medicine at the same time?
A In most cases, nasal sprays and antihistamines can be taken alongside Korean herbal medicine, but it is safest to tell us exactly which medications and doses you are currently using at your visit. Nasal sprays can worsen congestion if used habitually for too long, so how long you have been using one also needs to be checked.
Detailed Answer
Nasal steroid sprays or antihistamines prescribed for rhinitis or eustachian tube dysfunction can usually be taken alongside Korean herbal medicine without major issues. However, for accurate treatment, it is safest to inform us of all medications you are currently taking (ingredient, dose, and duration) at your visit. In particular, decongestant nasal sprays can cause rebound congestion, where congestion worsens if used continuously for more than about a week, so it is important to follow your doctor's instructions on duration of use.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
We do not treat conventional and Korean medicine treatment as opposing approaches, and combine them as needed while managing overall body circulation. Please let us know exactly which medications you are currently taking at your visit so we can coordinate safely.
