Q The sleep clinic said I have both narcolepsy and sleep apnea. Can both be treated at the same time?
A When sleep apnea is also present, nighttime sleep quality worsens and daytime sleepiness becomes more severe. Treating it first with CPAP can partially relieve narcolepsy symptoms too, so managing both together is effective.
Detailed Answer
Sleep apnea can occur independently of narcolepsy, but when the two overlap, nighttime sleep becomes severely fragmented and daytime drowsiness worsens further. When nighttime sleep quality improves with sleep apnea treatment (a CPAP machine or oral appliance), the daytime sleepiness of narcolepsy can also be partly reduced. Whether both are present must be accurately distinguished by polysomnography in order to set the treatment direction.
Oriental Medicine Clinic Perspective
When sleep apnea is also present, we consider a pattern in which phlegm-rheum (痰飲) blocks the airway along with spleen qi deficiency. Adding a phlegm-transforming (化痰) prescription to reduce swelling of the airway mucosa and the accumulation of phlegm-rheum can act on both the apnea and the narcolepsy aspects.
