Q Can acupuncture or moxibustion be done on young children? I'm worried my child will be scared.
A We use shallow pediatric needling or transcutaneous (skin-surface) stimulation, and most children adjust quickly.
Detailed Answer
It's natural for children to be afraid of acupuncture. Unlike adult treatment, pediatric acupuncture uses very shallow insertion or special pediatric tools that stimulate the skin surface. On the first visit, we allow plenty of time for the child to get used to the environment before any treatment.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
For growing pains, combining treatment of acupoints around the calf and knee with warm compresses or infrared therapy relaxes muscle tension and relieves pain quickly. Moxibustion uses an indirect method that provides only gentle warmth, so most children find it comfortable. With sufficient explanation beforehand, many children come to the treatment room on their own after just 2–3 visits.
