Q The pediatrician prescribed both an antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics — is it okay to use herbal medicine alongside them?
A Topical antibiotic ointments act only on the skin, so they can be used at the same time as herbal medicine without any problem. For oral antibiotics and herbal medicine, simply leave an interval of about 1 to 2 hours between them. If you tell us during your visit which medications you are currently using, we will adjust the herbal medicine accordingly.
Detailed Answer
Topical antibiotic ointments such as mupirocin or retapamulin act on the skin surface, so using them at the same time as herbal medicine does not affect absorption or efficacy. Oral antibiotics (such as amoxicillin-clavulanate) are absorbed in the stomach, so taking them about 1 to 2 hours apart from herbal medicine reduces absorption interference. Stopping an antibiotic you are taking suddenly carries a risk of resistance or recurrence, so it is important to complete the full prescribed course.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
At Dongjedang, we use herbal medicine concurrently while you complete the prescribed antibiotic course. If you tell us the name and dose of the antibiotic you are currently using during your visit, we will adjust the dosing times and herbal formula accordingly. While the antibiotic targets the bacteria, the herbal medicine plays the role of expelling heat-toxin and building the immune foundation.
