Q I'm taking hormone therapy and blood pressure medication for menopause. Is it okay to take heat-cold imbalance herbal medicine alongside them?
A In most cases, you can take herbal medicine while continuing your current medications, but if you are on hormone therapy or blood pressure medication, you must let us know so we can prescribe safely alongside them. Never stop your existing medication on your own — any overlap will be coordinated during your visit.
Detailed Answer
Hormone therapy is prescribed for menopausal symptoms, and blood pressure medication or autonomic-nervous-system medication is sometimes prescribed for the sensation of heat and palpitations. Stopping such medication on your own can cause a rebound worsening of symptoms, which is risky. Herbal medicine is often used together with these medications, but since ingredients may overlap or affect metabolism, it is essential to tell us about all medications and supplements you are taking.
Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective
At Dongjedang, we check your current medications during your visit and design the prescription so nothing conflicts, and we also guide you on how to space out dosing times. Once symptoms stabilize, we work together with you to gradually adjust your existing medication in consultation with your prescribing doctor. Gradual coordination is the principle — never stopping medication on your own.
