Q What kind of examination or diagnostic process happens before starting an immune tonic?

A Pulse diagnosis, abdominal diagnosis, and detailed history-taking are used to assess Lung Qi status and Spleen-Stomach weakness before prescribing.

Detailed Answer

Before prescribing an immune tonic, we first identify the current constitution and the state of excess/deficiency (虛實). Specifically, pulse diagnosis (脈診) checks the Qi and blood status of the Lung and Spleen-Stomach, abdominal diagnosis (腹診) examines digestive condition, and detailed history-taking (問診) synthesizes cold frequency, fatigue level, sleep, and stool condition. Through this process, the direction of the prescription is determined.

Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective

At Dongjedang, we secure ample time for the first consultation to also understand living environment and stress levels. Rather than simply prescribing a tonic because immunity seems weak, we first identify whether the root cause is Lung Qi deficiency, Spleen-Stomach weakness, or Kidney weakness.
