Q Does Korean medicine treatment actually work for postpartum depression? Shouldn't I just go to a psychiatrist?
A For mild postpartum depression, Korean medicine treatment can help replenish qi and blood and settle the mind. If it is moderate or more severe, or if you have thoughts of self-harm, we recommend collaborative care with a psychiatrist.
Detailed Answer
The approach to postpartum depression differs depending on its severity. If it is mild, with sadness, listlessness, and sleep disturbances but daily life still manageable, Korean medicine treatment can help replenish qi and blood and settle the Heart-spirit. However, if caring for the baby itself becomes impossible, or if thoughts of harming yourself or the baby arise, this is a situation that requires immediate psychiatric intervention. The same applies to postpartum psychosis (accompanied by hallucinations or delusions within four weeks of childbirth). In moderate or more severe cases, Korean medicine can be used alongside antidepressant treatment or contribute to maintenance care during recovery, and we honestly explain that it has limits as a standalone treatment.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Dongjedang does not recommend Korean medicine alone in every case. When qi and blood are greatly depleted, Korean medicine care that nourishes and settles the Heart-spirit is meaningful in building the foundation for recovery from depression. But when warning signs are present, we first recommend a psychiatrist and discuss combined treatment only after stabilization.
