Q I'm breastfeeding and also taking iron supplements. Is it okay for the baby if I take a postpartum tonic at the same time?
A Herbal medicine prescribed by a Korean medicine doctor specifically for a breastfeeding mother can be taken while nursing, and it is fine to take alongside iron supplements if you space them out. Please be sure to tell us whether you are breastfeeding and what medications you are taking at your consultation so we can adjust safely.
Detailed Answer
The fact that you are breastfeeding is the first thing we consider when prescribing postpartum herbal medicine. Herbal medicine formulated to be appropriate for nursing mothers can be taken while continuing to breastfeed, and by strengthening qi and blood it may actually help the mother's recovery and milk production. Iron supplements or other nutritional supplements taken together usually interfere little with absorption if spaced one to two hours apart from the herbal medicine.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
At Dongjedang, we check at the consultation whether you are breastfeeding and what iron supplements, painkillers, or nutritional supplements you are taking, and adjust the herbal formula and dosing times accordingly. We avoid herbs that could burden a nursing mother and prescribe with both the mother's recovery and the baby's safety in mind. If you experience any discomfort while taking the medicine, please let us know right away and we will readjust the formula.
