"Every time I eat flour-based foods or anything greasy, the next day my whole body flushes red without fail.
All night a burning heat rises from deep inside and I can't sleep because I'm scratching, and even heavy makeup can't hide the redness — I'm even afraid to meet people."

The voice of Ji-yoon (pseudonym), a woman in her 20s preparing for employment, was clearly marked with deep exhaustion when she knocked on the clinic door.

In the midst of vague anxiety, her daily life of studying until late at night and relying on late-night snacks collided one day with fierce resistance from her skin.

What began as something like mild hives around the neck and face gradually spread across her entire body.

In desperation, she visited a dermatologist, applied ointment, and tried medication — but it only subsided temporarily each time.

Even when the surface inflammation was covered over, an unrelenting vicious cycle repeated itself: the next day after eating flour-based or greasy delivery food as an excuse for stress, the red blaze would surge back up without fail.

Blood tests and allergy tests showed nothing unusual — but the reality of her scratching to the point of bleeding every night was anything but normal.

Hearing that she could only go out after covering the scars from nighttime scratching and her reddened face with heavy makeup, and that this had deeply shrunk her social life, my own heart sank.

Honestly speaking, a single ointment applied only to the skin's surface cannot completely uproot the symptoms that repeat for a lifetime.

I did not see Ji-yoon's symptoms as merely a problem on the outer surface of the skin.

The skin is like a mirror reflecting the inside, and also like a desperate warning light that notifies the outside when the body's internal order has collapsed.

Then why does food that enters the stomach cause such fierce red flames to erupt in the unexpected place of the skin?

image.pngUndigested Heat Erupting Through the Skin: "Gastrointestinal Damp-Heat"

In traditional Korean medicine, the state in which the stomach loses its original strength and weakens, leaving food undigested and accumulating as waste in the organs, is called food stagnation (식적, 食積).

When these undigested residues linger and ferment and decay over time, developing into a hot, sticky energy, this is called gastrointestinal damp-heat (위장습열, 胃腸濕熱).

This excessive heat generated in the confined space of the digestive system — like backed-up putrid wastewater that eventually reverses up through a completely clogged drain — cannot stay contained and spreads throughout the entire body via the bloodstream, inducing a state of blood-heat (혈열, 血熱).

Ultimately, the boiling heat that has nowhere to go searches for the only passage to escape, causing excessive dilation of capillaries that reddens the skin and erupts as inflammation accompanied by extreme itching.

This is like smoke from an old stove with a completely blocked chimney that has nowhere to go and seeps out through the gaps of windows.

From the perspective of modern medicine, this process is also explained through the intimate connection between the intestines and skin.

Frequent consumption of flour-based foods and greasy late-night snacks causes a microbial imbalance of beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut, inducing leaky gut syndrome in which the protective barrier loosens.

When large proteins or toxins infiltrate the bloodstream through the breached intestinal mucosa, the immune system treats them as external invaders and mounts a fierce attack, triggering a systemic inflammatory response.

The collapsed gastrointestinal environment and the hypersensitized immune system negatively affect each other, forming a solid vicious cycle that fuels the red heat sensation of atopic dermatitis.

So is there a way to escape this persistent red blaze and the itch that disrupts every night's sleep, and reclaim comfortable skin?

To fully calm the redness, one must first gradually reduce the wrong dietary habits that throw heavy burdens onto the digestive system — such as stimulating late-night snacks — which constantly ignite the body's inflammatory embers.

A method that can be gently practiced in daily life is to frequently drink warm water close to body temperature instead of cold beverages, soothing the overworked and tense stomach.

I recommend gradually adding to the daily diet ingredients such as cabbage or radish, which are rich in natural digestive enzymes and protect the mucosa.

These changes are like gentle and cool rain falling on dry, heat-parched land — greatly helping to gradually cool the burning heat sensation deep within the body.

In addition, sleep deprivation and chronic stress also act as core causes that overstimulate the autonomic nervous system and generate unnecessary heat.

For the body to cleanly clear accumulated inflammatory substances and regenerate cells on its own, one must go to bed at a consistent time as much as possible and ensure sufficient rest.

If the itch is so severe that weeping occurs or there are clear signs of secondary infection accompanied by heat sensation, do not hesitate — visit a nearby medical institution to receive appropriate treatment.

image.pngTrue Recovery That Goes Beyond Covering the Surface to Governing the Inside

The true recovery from atopic dermatitis is not merely temporarily suppressing symptoms with medication to calm the redness on the skin's surface.

It must be a warm, integrative healing process that fundamentally improves the collapsed gastrointestinal environment, helping the body to regulate unnecessary heat and overcome inflammation on its own.

A careful prescription precisely tailored to the patient's unique constitution and gastrointestinal condition helps to restore the balance of the collapsed digestive system and safely discharge the accumulated heat.

This is like the principle of tending carefully to the invisible roots of a tree — because only when the fertile soil is healthy can green leaves finally sprout.

After carefully examining the root cause and making sustained efforts, Ji-yoon no longer hides her face behind heavy makeup.

The suffering you are experiencing now is absolutely not your fault — please do not try to endure it alone.

When the inner wounds are wrapped in warmth, your body will show the great resilience to return to its original clear and healthy state.

My role is not merely to hand over ointment, but to be a true helper who finds together with patients the key to healing on the path toward finding balance on their own.

Even if not through me, I sincerely cheer for you to meet healthcare providers who can fully empathize with your exhausted heart and carefully examine the causes behind the skin from the perspective of the whole living body — and may you quickly recover your radiant daily life.
