Q I am on medication from cardiology. Can I take herbal medicine alongside it? (57, self-employed)
A Combination is usually possible, but we need to know exactly what you are taking. Heart-rate lowering drugs, anticoagulants, thyroid medication and anti-anxiety drugs particularly need checking. Never reduce or stop your existing medication on your own.
Detailed Answer
The key principle is never to adjust existing medication yourself. Abruptly stopping a rate-control drug or an anticoagulant can be dangerous. Even if symptoms improve with Korean medicine treatment, any reduction is decided together with the prescribing clinician.
When you visit, the best approach is to bring the medication packets or prescription and a list of any health supplements exactly as they are. Recalling names from memory is far less accurate.
We pay particular attention to the following. If you take an anticoagulant, herbs in the circulation-promoting group are handled cautiously. If you take thyroid medication, we advise spacing the doses apart. If you take anti-anxiety or sleep medication, we adjust the formulation so drowsiness does not stack.
Generally, leaving one to two hours between herbal and conventional medicine is sufficient.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Many patients say their heart rate is controlled by medication yet fatigue, cold hands and feet, and sleep quality remain. Korean medicine treatment is used for that remaining part. It is not a replacement for the medication but a way of filling the space it does not cover.
