Q I'm applying an antibiotic ointment at home — what symptoms mean I should go to the ER or hospital right away?
A If high fever appears, the lesions spread rapidly with the surrounding skin red and swollen (cellulitis), severe pain, facial swelling, or urine that is reddish or reduced in volume, you must go to the hospital immediately. This is a stage that is difficult to manage at home with ointment.
Detailed Answer
Even while applying a topical antibiotic, if the following symptoms appear you must visit the hospital immediately. If the lesion enlarges rapidly and the surrounding skin spreads red with heat, swelling, and pain, it may have progressed to cellulitis (soft tissue infection). High fever of 38.5 degrees Celsius or above, chills, and listlessness or lethargy require ruling out the possibility of a bloodstream infection (sepsis). If swelling around the eyes, blood in the urine, or decreased urination appears within 1 to 3 weeks after recovery, glomerulonephritis as a complication should be suspected. In such cases, visit the ER, pediatrics, or dermatology immediately.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
At Dongjedang, when warning signs like the above appear, we advise receiving Western emergency care immediately rather than prioritizing Korean medicine treatment. At the stage where an acute bacterial infection spreads throughout the body or invades organs, systemic antibiotic administration comes first to protect life. Once the condition is stabilized, adding Korean medicine treatment to expel remaining heat-toxin and aid recovery is safe.
