#Prognosis / Recovery

Q I had warts on my hands removed with cryotherapy, but they reappeared a few months later. Why do they keep recurring, and when will they be completely gone?

A Wart recurrence occurs when HPV, which is dormant in the skin, reactivates when immunity weakens. Even if the lesions are removed through treatment, recurrence will occur if the HPV itself is not completely eradicated. Once the immune system completely suppresses the HPV, one can live without recurrence, and in most cases, the condition stabilizes within 1 to 2 years of consistent treatment.

Detailed Answer

The core reason for wart recurrence is that while cryotherapy removes surface lesions, it cannot completely eliminate HPV lurking within the surrounding normal skin. HPV lies dormant within basal layer keratinocytes and proliferates again when local immunity weakens. Recurrence is particularly frequent in areas subject to repeated trauma, such as fingers, the backs of the hands, and the soles of the feet. Strategies for preventing recurrence include: ① applying topical antiviral agents (imiquimod) to the surrounding skin after treatment, ② strengthening immunity through sufficient sleep, nutrition, and exercise, ③ taking zinc supplements for 3 months, and ④ managing stress. Generally, once sufficient cellular immunity against HPV is established, warts do not recur after natural disappearance. Treatment resistance and recurrence are much more frequent when taking immunosuppressants. In Korean traditional medicine, recurrent warts are interpreted as a sign of a deficiency in Jeonggi (正氣). If you consistently take a prescription between cryotherapy treatments that replenishes Qi and blood with herbal medicines that nourish Qi and strengthen the internal organs or herbal medicines that comprehensively nourish both Qi and blood, and expels wind toxins using Schizonepeta tenuifolia and Saposhnikovia divaricata, the recurrence cycle gradually lengthens. Dongjedang recommends a 3-month follow-up observation after the completion of treatment.
