Q How exactly does amenorrhea treatment proceed at a Korean medicine clinic?
A After examination identifies the cause type (Qi-Blood deficiency, Blood stasis, or stress type), we take a stepwise approach in the order of tonifying Blood, warming the uterus, and invigorating Blood to dispel stasis. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are combined, and progress is usually reviewed every two to three months.
Detailed Answer
At the first visit, we thoroughly assess when menstruation stopped, the cause, accompanying symptoms, weight changes, and stress circumstances. We then prescribe based on the type: Samul-tang (Four-Substance decoction) type formulas for the Qi-Blood deficiency type (where nutrition and weight recovery are central); Dohong-samul-tang (Peach Kernel and Safflower Four-Substance decoction) or implantation-type formulas for the Blood stasis and Cold-Damp congealing type (lower abdominal cold and blockage); and Bupleurum (Siho) based formulas for the stress type (soothing-Liver, regulating-Qi). Acupuncture is combined, centered on the Gwanwon (CV4), Sameumgyo (SP6), and Jagung (uterus) points.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
In Korean medicine, we proceed through three stages in order: first, building the material to fill the uterus through Blood tonification; second, opening the blocked pathways through warming the uterus and invigorating Blood; and third, raising ovarian function through Yang tonification (boyang). Once menstrual signs return, we continue the Yang-tonifying stage until the cycle stabilizes, which is the final step in preventing recurrence.
