Q When I first visit Dongjedang for postpartum depression, what process does the consultation follow?
A At the first consultation, we comprehensively check your physical condition and emotional symptoms since childbirth, combining the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale with Korean medicine diagnosis. We then establish a blood-nourishing, spirit-calming prescription and treatment plan suited to your qi and blood state.
Detailed Answer
At the first visit, we take a detailed history of the timing of childbirth, the delivery method, whether you are breastfeeding, your sleep state, and when the symptoms began. We assess the degree of symptoms through the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and examine the deficiency or excess (heoshil) state of qi and blood through pulse diagnosis and tongue diagnosis. We directly check for thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby to first evaluate the level of crisis. If there are no warning signs, we establish a Korean medicine treatment plan centered on nourishing blood and calming the spirit; if there is a crisis, we recommend a psychiatrist first. We adjust the formula composition according to whether you are breastfeeding.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Dongjedang's first consultation for postpartum depression looks at body and mind together. Taking how much qi and blood have been depleted and how unstable the Heart-spirit is as the two axes of diagnosis, we design a treatment direction that fills in the body's materials through nourishing blood (bohyeol) and settles the mind through calming the spirit (ansin).
