Q Is it safe to take Gyeobitang or Ondamtang for a long period? I am being extra cautious because I am already taking psychiatric medication.
A Gyeobitang and Ondamtang are highly safe prescriptions with a long history of clinical use. When used in conjunction with psychiatric medication, we maintain a dosage interval and monitor the treatment with regular blood tests.
Detailed Answer
Herbal medicines that nourish both the mind and the spleen/stomach, as well as those that resolve phlegm and stabilize the mind, are traditional Korean medicine prescriptions with hundreds of years of clinical history. They offer high safety even with long-term use when prescribed according to one's constitution and condition. When used in combination with SSRIs or SNRIs, the basic principle is to maintain a 1-2 hour interval to reduce absorption competition and to check liver and kidney function through blood tests every three months. We absolutely do not recommend arbitrarily stopping psychiatric medication or replacing it with herbal medicine.
Perspective of a Traditional Korean Medicine Clinic
Dongjedang considers the combination of traditional Korean medicine and psychiatric treatment to be the standard for PTSD treatment, rather than traditional Korean medicine alone. We always verify the list of all medications you are currently taking during your consultation to formulate a safe prescription. Please inform us if your medication changes or dosage is adjusted, so we can adjust the prescription accordingly.
