#Causes Explained

Q My child suddenly started blinking repeatedly and shrugging their shoulders — could this be a tic disorder?

A Tic disorder is a condition in which muscles move or sounds are produced repeatedly, involuntarily, and independent of the person's will. It is divided into motor tics such as eye blinking and shoulder shrugging, and vocal tics such as sniffling, and is most commonly seen in school-age children.

Detailed Answer

Tic Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by sudden, repetitive, involuntary movements or vocalizations. Motor tics typically include eye blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder shrugging, and head jerking, while vocal tics manifest as sniffling, throat clearing, or repetitive words. When both types persist for more than one year, the diagnosis becomes Tourette Syndrome. The primary mechanism involves dopamine imbalance in the basal ganglia-cortical circuit, and it is quite common, affecting 1 in every 5 to 20 school-age children. Symptoms tend to worsen during stress, fatigue, and excitement, and temporarily improve after sleep.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

In Korean medicine, tics are understood as Liver Wind stirring internally (Gan-pung-nae-dong). When Liver Qi becomes constrained, Wind is generated, and this Wind disrupts the muscles and meridians, causing involuntary movements. Children have a constitutionally strong Liver and a weak Spleen, making them especially susceptible to Wind flaring up. The core treatment direction is Soothing the Liver and Calming the Mind — releasing constrained Liver Qi and stabilizing the spirit.
