#Treatment Schedule

Q I am a 36-year-old working mom living in Dong-gu, Incheon. I have very little time because I am raising two children while working. How often do I need to come for thoracic outlet syndrome treatment?

A It is generally recommended to visit 2 to 3 times a week during the acute phase, and reduce the frequency to 1 to 2 times a week once symptoms stabilize. For those with tight schedules, a plan combining intensive treatment once a week with self-exercise can also be designed. After evaluating your condition during the initial consultation, we will determine a realistic treatment plan tailored to your daily schedule.

Detailed Answer

The frequency of treatment varies depending on the stage of symptoms. During the acute phase, when numbness interferes with daily life, it is efficient to treat 2 to 3 times a week to rapidly reduce muscle tension and nerve irritation. Once you enter the improvement phase, the interval is increased to 1 to 2 times a week, and the emphasis on exercise therapy is increased. During weeks when visiting is difficult, the gaps can be filled with self-stretching and posture correction assignments, allowing even busy office workers to fully complete the treatment. What matters is the continuity of treatment intensity tailored to the stage of improvement, rather than the number of visits itself. From a Korean medicine perspective, numbness in individuals balancing childcare and work is often underpinned by a weakened body's recovery capacity rather than simple stagnation of Qi and blood. Since recovery is slower with the same treatment when Qi and blood are deficient, Dongjedang employs a strategy of increasing the density of a single treatment session rather than increasing the number of visits. During the visit, pressure points are intensively relieved using acupuncture and, if necessary, moxibustion and pharmacopuncture. At home, the gaps between treatments are filled by replenishing Qi and blood and clearing dampness and blood stasis with herbal medicine tailored to the individual's constitution. When external and internal treatments are aligned, continuity of care can be maintained with just one visit per week, making this treatment plan particularly advantageous for those with limited time.
