Post-Cesarean Recovery

Lochia is discharge that appears as the postpartum uterus recovers — it starts red and, over several weeks, lightens to brown, yellow, and then white as it decreases. Afterpains occur as the uterus contracts back to its original size; they can be more noticeable during breastfeeding but ease over days to weeks. However, if lochia that had been decreasing suddenly becomes bright red and heavy again, or is accompanied by large clots, a foul odor, or fever, this may indicate infection or a bleeding problem and requires an OB-GYN visit.
