Q I'm at home recovering after a C-section — what symptoms mean I should go to the hospital right away?
A If you have a fever of 38°C or higher, redness/discharge/opening of the surgical incision, sudden heavy bleeding, foul-smelling lochia, severe abdominal pain, swelling and pain in one leg (possible blood clot), or shortness of breath/chest pain, go to your OB-GYN without delay.
Detailed Answer
Most people recover smoothly after a C-section, but there are warning signs that require immediate care. A fever of 38°C or higher, redness, discharge, severe pain, or opening of the incision may indicate infection. Lochia suddenly becoming bright red and heavy again, or large clots and foul odor, along with severe abdominal pain, also need to be checked. In particular, swelling and pain in one leg or burning in the calf, and sudden shortness of breath or chest pain may signal a dangerous postpartum blood clot (venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), which requires immediate care at an OB-GYN or emergency room.
Our Korean Medicine Clinic's Perspective
At Dongjedang, we also check for these warning signs first at your initial visit. If signs such as fever, heavy bleeding, incision problems, or blood-clot-like leg swelling appear, we recommend an OB-GYN visit over Korean Medicine treatment. Once these are ruled out, we proceed with supportive treatment to replenish qi and blood during recovery — this order matters.
