Q I've heard that taking herbal medicine shrinks ovarian cysts. Does the cyst really disappear?
A To be honest, it's difficult to guarantee that herbal medicine will definitely eliminate a cyst that has already formed. For functional cysts, it can support their natural resolution; for non-functional cysts, you can expect help with stabilizing the size and relieving accompanying symptoms.
Detailed Answer
Advertising claims that herbal medicine reduces the size of ovarian cysts may be exaggerated, so caution is needed. Functional cysts may disappear on their own anyway, so it is hard to conclude that herbal medicine was the reason if a cyst resolves during Korean medicine treatment. Non-functional cysts (endometriomas, dermoid cysts, etc.) are not completely removed by Korean medicine treatment alone, but in some cases it can help stabilize the cyst size, relieve accompanying symptoms such as menstrual pain and pelvic pain, and protect overall ovarian function. If a cyst exceeds a certain size (usually 5 to 6 cm or more) or shows findings suspicious for malignancy, laparoscopic surgery may be appropriate, so regular ultrasound follow-up must always be maintained alongside.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
What Dongjedang aims for is reducing your daily discomfort rather than the cyst size number. By improving a cold, stagnant pelvic environment through womb-warming (ongung) and phlegm-resolving (hwadam), we create an internal environment in which cysts are less likely to form, and we manage things so that accompanying symptoms such as menstrual pain, abdominal bloating, and irregular menstruation become more comfortable. When findings call for surgery, we tell you honestly.
