Q I was told there's a fluid-filled cyst on my ovary. Why do ovarian cysts develop?
A An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac inside the ovary. The most common type is a functional cyst, which forms temporarily during ovulation and then disappears. Non-functional cysts such as endometriomas and dermoid cysts do not resolve on their own.
Detailed Answer
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms inside the ovary. The most common type is the functional cyst, which arises naturally during ovulation and usually disappears within 1 to 3 months. When a follicle fails to rupture just before ovulation, it becomes a follicular cyst; when the corpus luteum swells excessively after ovulation, it becomes a corpus luteum cyst. In contrast, there are non-functional cysts that do not resolve on their own, such as an endometrioma (chocolate cyst), in which endometrial tissue settles on the ovary and old blood accumulates; a dermoid cyst (teratoma), which contains fat and hair tissue; and serous or mucinous cysts. Depending on size, shape, and internal structure, evaluation may be needed to rule out malignancy.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
In Korean medicine, the formation of a mass such as an ovarian cyst, where fluid collects inside the ovary, is understood as the result of dampness-phlegm (seupdam) from impaired fluid metabolism in the body, combined with blood stasis (eohyeol), where blood fails to circulate and congeals in place. A cold pelvic environment is thought to stagnate blood flow and make fluid more likely to coalesce, so at Dongjedang we take an approach that warms the pelvis, clears dampness-phlegm, and promotes healthy blood circulation.
