#Food / Triggers

Q It is much worse the day after drinking, or after a big meal. Is that connected? (49, self-employed)

A Yes. The day after drinking, dehydration and an unsettled autonomic system raise the heart rate; after overeating, blood flow shifts to digestion and the heart works harder. A blood-sugar drop after a load of sweet food can also trigger palpitations.

Detailed Answer

Three situations, taken separately.

The day after drinking: alcohol causes dehydration through its diuretic effect and disturbs electrolytes. Add poor sleep quality and the sympathetic nervous system dominates the next day. That is why frequent drinkers report "palpitations every weekend."

After overeating: blood flow concentrates in the digestive tract and heart rate rises to compensate. Lying down straight after a late, heavy meal brings palpitations and reflux together.

After sweet food: when blood sugar rises sharply then falls, the body releases adrenaline. Palpitations, cold sweat, hand tremor and hunger arrive as a set. It is common in people who skip meals and snack instead.

The response is simple: reduce the amount and frequency of alcohol and drink plenty of water; keep dinner moderate and at least three hours before bed; and never eat sweets alone — pair them with protein.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

Korean medicine views palpitations after overeating or drinking as a burden on the digestive system rising into the chest. Bloating, frequent belching and a pounding chest is the classic combination. For these patients, settling the digestion rather than treating the heart reduces the palpitations as well.
