Q What order do you follow when treating chest pain at a Korean medicine clinic? I am a 33-year-old woman visiting for the first time.
A First we check for emergency signs and whether cardiac and lung causes have been ruled out, then find by hand the movements that reproduce the pain and the tender points. We then release the stiff areas with acupuncture and observe the response, adding moxibustion or herbal medicine matched to the constitution as needed. Finally we adjust the daily conditions producing the pain.
Detailed Answer
Step one is confirming safety. We check the character of the pain, how long it lasts, and any accompanying symptoms to look for emergency signs, and ask whether you have had cardiac testing. If you have not, we sometimes recommend testing first.
Step two is locating the source. We have you raise an arm or twist to see which direction brings out the pain, and find where it hurts on pressure. Step three is treatment, releasing the identified area together with the connected tension in the neck and back. Step four is recurrence management, choosing one or two things you can realistically change among sitting posture, sleeping posture, and how you exercise.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
Because the treatment site changes when the source differs, even for the same chest pain, we spend time on history taking and palpation at the first visit. Once treatment begins we recheck pain intensity and the reproducing movement each time and revise the plan. Adjusting to the response rather than pushing the original plan through is the principle.
