Q I am a 39-year-old designer with chest pain along with stiffness in my neck, shoulders, and back. Are they connected?
A Pain at the front of the chest and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and back often arise together from the same postural problem. When the upper back muscles stiffen, rib movement becomes restricted and the front of the chest can feel painful. That is why we examine the whole upper body, not just the painful spot.
Detailed Answer
Looking at a monitor for long periods pushes the head forward and rolls the shoulders inward. The back of the neck and the upper back stiffen from constantly holding on, while the front of the chest stiffens in a shortened position. Tension from both directions effectively squeezes the ribs front and back, so chest pain, shoulder stiffness, and a tight neck appear as one package.
In such cases, treating the chest alone brings a few comfortable days before the pain returns. Tension in the neck and back must be lowered together, and the parts of the day where posture collapses must be identified and adjusted, for the pain to settle durably. If headaches or arm numbness are also present, the neck needs checking as well.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
During examination we press not only the front of the chest but also the side of the neck, the top of the shoulder, and the inner edge of the shoulder blade. Pain is often reproduced at these points, so we set the acupuncture range across the whole upper body. For those who chronically feel their shoulders are cold and rigid, we add moxibustion.
