Q Are there stretches I can do at my desk? I am a 36-year-old office worker and my chest feels tight when I sit for long.

A Opening the front of the chest and moving the upper back for one or two minutes once an hour changes how quickly pain accumulates. While pain is present, do not bounce; stretch only to a comfortable range. More important than stretching is not staying in one posture for long.

Detailed Answer

Three easy ones are worth recommending. First, place your forearm on a door frame and step forward to lengthen the front of the chest for 20 seconds. Second, sitting in your chair, place both hands behind your head and lean back gently to extend the upper back. Third, breathe in slowly through the nose, feeling the ribs widen sideways, then breathe out long through the mouth.

Do all of these only within a pain-free range. If it stings while lengthening or pain lingers into the next day, reduce the range. And setting an alarm to stand up once an hour is more effective than any stretch. Breaking the pattern before posture collapses is the point.

Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective

In clinic we select only movements that a patient can realistically perform in their own working environment. How many times a day you actually do them determines the result far more than how many kinds you know. Releasing the stiff areas with acupuncture first makes the same stretches much easier, so we recommend doing them alongside treatment.
